Alicia Pons, a teachers of teachers, is an elegant and accomplished dancer with refined technique who teaches authentic milonguero style close tango in close embrace. She is famous for her beautiful, precise and playful footwork, and a strongly sensual connection with her partner, creating a dance of great subtlety and beauty, with movement that is deeply expressive of the music.
Alicia exemplifies communication and presence in the dance, and this is
the focus in her teaching for both men and women. The dance becomes the
creative conversation between the two partners. She emphasizes the
woman's ability to not just follow, but to be an equal partner in the
dance, contributing inspiration and musicality. Her ability to imbue
the role of the woman with verve and style has made her one of the most
sought after female partners in Buenos Aires
milongas. On the dance floor, Alicia is without equal. As a teacher, Alicia emphasizes the connection between the partners, and in particular the woman’s ability to not just follow, but to be an equal protagonist in the dance. Her knowledge of the mechanics of what makes the dance work in the “milonguero” embrace is unique. Alicia is one of only a handful of teachers of Argentine Tango who teaches this particular style of tango and she is the only teacher who teaches what she teaches. Even in Buenos Aires, Alicia Pons is unique in what she teaches. Alicia teaches the “authentic” style of tango danced in the traditional clubs in central Buenos Aires, such as El Beso, where it is danced in a very close, chest to chest embrace and there may be up to 160 dancers in a 90 square foot area who dance without bumping into each other and who respect each other’s dance space. Alicia teaches how to move your partner by literally only your breathing, how to imbue a turn with the velocity and excitement of a roller coaster, how to dance an exciting dance within only a square yard of floor space. Alicia teaches how to communicate with your body and soul in response to the music; she teaches you how to relate your individual dance with each of the other couples dancing on the floor at the same time. She teaches respect for the age old Milonguero traditions of the dance floor beginning with the manner of the invitation to dance (the “cabaceo”) and ending with the man escorting his partner back to her seat when the dance is finished. Alicia’s teaching methods are grounded in her academic training. She holds a degree in Educational Science and Psychology. She is currently an instructor for university level education students, in addition to her teaching, being a mother of two sons, and running her family real estate business. See Alicia dance!
